Clean Out your Pantry Part 2

Dump the High Fructose Corn Syrup!

In the late 1970′s, when Dr. Atkins tried to tell people that fat didn’t make people fat, the obesity rate in this country was 15 percent.  It was at this point that the low fat industry took hold, and thirty years later, the obesity rate is at 32 percent.

  • So along with the refined flour, high fructose corn syrup is used to make something taste good.  The US production of HFCS went from 3,000 tons in 1967 to 9,227,000 tons in 2005. TuftsUniversity researcher report that Americans consume more calories from HFCS than from any other source.( P. 101 Mastering Your Metabolism)
  • HFCS plays tricks on the body so it doesn’t release the hormone Leptin, which tells you that you are full.  Instead, you will actually consume more calories over the next 24 hours than if you had eaten plain table sugar.

What’s my next step?

    1. There really is only one step.  You must get rid of all products with high fructose corn syrup.  This is poison in your body.  Just say no!
    2. Become aware of how much sugar you actually eat.  The American Heart Association says average Americans eat 22 teaspoons of sugar a day.  The daily recommended amount of sugar a day for women is 6 teaspoons and for men is 9 teaspoons.( This does not apply to naturally occurring sugars in fruits, veggies, and dairy products.) One 12 ounce soft drink contains 8 teaspoons of sugar.
    3. Read labels and see if you can catch all the names for sugar.  -ose is a suffix that means sugar so Galactose, maltose, lactose, glucose, dextrose, are all forms of sugar, as are malt, maple and rice syrups.
    4. Healthy replacements for sugars are evaporated cane sugar, agave nectar, stevia, xylitol, honey, maple syrup.  If you are doing a cleansing diet, stick with stevia and xylitol as they do not lead to candida, or an overgrowth of yeast in the belly.
    5. Limit your sweets by eating a diet full of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and organic meats, fish and poultry.

Have You Outgrown Your Space?

I was sitting with my friend Charmaine today as we were planning an upcoming class we are going to do together, and out of the blue she said, “I just have to ask you, have you outgrown your space?”

At first I thought she meant have I outgrown my physical space where I do my writing and healing work, and then slowly the words took on a different meaning.

I have been doing a lot of soul searching lately, wondering what direction my life is going next and what I want it to look like.   A lot of my journaling has been around who I am now and who I want to be in the near future.   In light of those discussions I am having with myself, I see how I have outgrown the space in my mind of who I am right now at this time.  I have been keeping myself, my talents and the best of me in a box, and I have outgrown the container that I built to keep me there.   I have outgrown the limiting beliefs that there is only a certain way to make a living, that writers always starve and I am not talented enough to fit any job description I would find in the want ads.   I am expanding my view of who I am in the world.  Let me give you a glimpse.

“Jan Haas is a well-known published author and speaker who devotes time to writing every day, teaches journaling and guided meditation classes and retreats, and loves to speak to women about creating balance in their lives.  Her topics include but are not limited to Overcoming the Biggest Obstacle in Your life-You!,  Harnessing the Power of the Present Moment. and Fun is Necessary for Success.

Wow!  All of those titles just popped into my head.  Now comes the next step:  Believing that it is true!  My mind doesn’t know the difference between what is real and what I make up in my head, so instead of making up stories like, “I don’t have a prosperous life,” I would much rather make up the idea that I am a successful writer and speaker.  Eric Butterworth, in his book Spiritual Economics, says that “Prosperity comes from the latin root which literally translates: “According to hope’ or ‘to go forward hopefully.’ ”

Now I move forward hopefully into the future, with this new vision of myself clearly within focus.

Healing Sessions with Jan

“Healing Touch, in my opinion, is ministry at its highest level.  It is about responding to that inner voice that calls one to be God’s instrument, to act out of a compassionate heart with no attachment to the outcome.  It is about being a vessel, a conduit, an instrument, a channel and a currier through which God can act in another’s life.  It is about being in the flow of God’s grace.”

Linda Smith, Called into Healing

Healing Touch is a type of energy work that helps promote the balance of the chakra system.  I have been doing Healing Touch since 1999.  This healing work helps those who are suffering from pain and illness as well as those who are just looking for stress reduction.  Through the healing work, clients experience relaxation, a sense of coming back to the body, and a renewed sense of well-being in their lives.

Each of my sessions starts with a guided meditation, divinely inspired, to help my clients travel in their imaginations to beautiful places that allow them to be pain free, stress free, and often find the answers to the questions that lie deep in their hearts.

One of the best things about Healing Touch is it requires me to be centered and out of my own way in order to fully be present to the needs of my clients.

If you are interested in experiencing the grounding and relaxation of Healing Touch, mention this post and get $15 off the normal cost of $60/session.

In the Space of Own Time

This week, as I contemplated the ways I played, I realized that part of my play was reclaiming leisure time, not necessarily having laugh out loud fun time.  I did wake up each day this week with the idea that I needed to add a little play to my day.  The question I am now asking is “What will I do with my own time?”

For me, I play in ways that often look like work to others.  And in fact, depending on the mood I am in, it can feel like work when I am under a deadline, but something I love to do is bake.  It is my idea of fun to find new recipes and adapt them not only to gluten free, but also to healthy gluten free.  This means less sugar, more whole grain and fiber while keeping the taste and texture.  Lucky for me, there are a lot of great resources for healthy gluten free recipes on the internet, and I can choose what looks good and create the food without always having to create the recipe.  I am lucky because this kind of play leads to a result- fresh baked breakfast cookies, as well as quinoa carrot breakfast cake.  A friend of mine can’t eat rice, corn, sugar, eggs or egg replacer, so I love the challenge of creating  food that she can eat.   Not only did I enjoy the process of baking, but now I have food to eat for a few days, before the family eats everything and I get to play again.

As wonderful as baking is, I like the kind of play that doesn’t lead to a tangible result.  I like to know that I spend time nurturing the soul, bringing more balance to my life.   I can feel the  balance even if I can’t see it.   This week, I spent my leisure time thumbing through a wonderful book called “Faces in the Rocks.” It was written by Randy and Judy Brown as their grief work after the Columbine tragedy.  They spent six years hiking the foothills of Colorado finding faces in the rocks.  Then Judy put the book together with great quotes.  I spend time reflecting on each page, and sometimes it took me awhile to find the face.   It was inspiring, and good for my soul to soak in the beauty and it inspires me to find my own faces on my next hike in the mountains.  Which brings me to my fun for this Friday. Tony and I are going hiking up at Red Rocks to enjoy the last of the fall colors.  I hope that you find a great way to play, or at least enjoy leisure time this week!

How to Experience Moments of Well-Being

Today as I was walking and listening to my Philosopher’s Notes, I came across a great quote that I related to my own life.  The quote come from Pema Chodron’s book, “The Places that Scare You” A Guide to Fearlessness in Difficult Times.

She says, “The ordinariness of our good fortune can make it hard to catch.”

It is so easy to get bogged down in life with all of the problems that we see around us that we forget how good our life really is.   Pema recommends we  “incline our minds to joy.”

When I start looking for beauty and love around me, guess what?  I see amazing examples of Divine Love in action in the people I meet, the beautiful colors of the fall trees, the blue sky, my dog Sophie who reminds me to get out and walk in nature, etc.  On the other hand, when I look for things that are wrong in my world such as my car needing to be fixed, and all the little things that irk me about the people I encounter, I just bring more of the same into my world.  So the question is, what am I choosing to focus on?

In order to feel a sense of well-being in your body, you have to put yourself in the present moment.  Worrying about the future or living in regret over the past only takes energy from being here and now. So maybe you think your here and now isn’t so wonderful.  My question to you is “What are you choosing to focus on?”  Is the goodness in your life so ordinary that you are overlooking it?  Can you look around you right now and see three things that you are grateful for?  A job that earns you good money, a lunch that is healthy, a good friend who shows up when you most need her?  Take a minute right now and on a sticky note, write down the three things that make you smile, and feel good.

Now imagine if you carried that technique into any moment that you felt overwhelmed by the problems in your life.  Do you think you might feel a shift in how you perceived those problems?   Maybe they are really opportunities in disguise. I think you might find that your life is pretty incredible right now.  You can start with the fact that you got out of bed and can move!

So re-frame your current situation by focusing on the good in your life and see what kind of shift your life can make.  I encourage you to try this technique and check back in and let me know how it goes.

Searching for Play

When I couldn’t sleep the other night, I decided to do a little research into Play.  I have added it as one of my blog categories because frankly, my life has been a little boring with all work and no play so I am hoping that as I teach others about the wonderful art of having fun, I will incorporate more play into my own life.  Painting with Andrea Costantine on Wednesday made me realize how fun it is to spend two hours not thinking about work, or money, or kids.

Now, I know that play isn’t academic, and all it takes it a desire to find fun in my life again, but I was really curious as to what kind of research is being done on the value of play.

I opened up Google and typed in “The necessity of Play” and found out that it is vital for children.  Agreed.  Then I typed in “Women learning how to play” and I got all kinds of instructions on how to play golf or the guitar.  Next, I tried “The Art of Play” and I got a theater book on acting.  Finally I typed in “Balancing work and play” and I got some essays on the importance of leisure.  I felt like I was getting somewhere until I explored two different sites that talked about two different books, one  published in 1994 and another  published in 2004.

I found no recent information about the necessity of play, specifically for women.  It seems my husband knows intrinsically that adding leisure is necessary and he will drop many other things to play his guitar, while I will make sure the dishes are done, the bills are paid, and the house is straightened before I will think about what I can do for myself.   I know that I have forgotten the joys of letting an afternoon slip by because I was deeply engaged in imaginative play.  In my line of work, where writing is vital, I know that I would truly benefit from more imagination and less hours behind the computer screen.  I know that imagination sparks creativity, that it can sharpen problem solving skills, and also bring some stress relief to our busy lives.  I believe that having fun can also make us happier people.

So I begin my quest to explore play and learn more about incorporating it into my daily life. If you know of good resources for me to explore, let me know, and I will gladly share what I learn with all of you.  In the meantime, share with me your favorite ways to play. Every Friday, I will work (play) to bring you new ideas on how to add fun back into your life.  Just knowing that I am blogging about Fun Fridays is making me think of ways to play every day!

What is one thing you do for fun?  How do you play?

How abundant is your life?

We would give anything for what we have.

Tony Hoagland

When I saw this quote today, I knew that I would have to write about it.  In this season of harvesting the crops and all the bounty of the land, we forget to look at the abundance of our own lives.  I have been in a place of looking at what I don’t have, rather than what I do have.  This quote hit me hard this morning, as I realized I have not been looking at the abundance and gifts that are in my life.

Any of us would fight to have a beautiful home, cars to drive, children that are smart, healthy and happy, a relationship with a spouse that is supportive, encouraging and loving, and friends that we meet on our journey of life.  We would give anything to be healthy.  Sadly, sometimes we have to lose something before we stop taking things for granted.

I am busy writing about my healing journey fifteen years ago when I spent almost 150 days in the hospital.  Remembering where I was gives me a new perspective on where I am.  It reminds me that I have the strength within me to overcome all kinds of odds.

Now I am looking at all the gifts, both material and intrinsic that are a part of my life.  I am grateful every day to get to encounter the Divine through the people I meet.  And I am grateful for the reminders to be on the lookout for abundance.  It is all around us, and it is ours to enjoy.  Are you in the act of receiving, or are your arms crossed, pouting because you don’t have that one thing that eludes you?  Accepting the gift is a choice.  What are you choosing in this present moment?

Stress and Belly Fat

When our bodies are under stress, the adrenal glands secrete an abundance of cortisol.
The right amount of cortisol helps with

    • regulating blood pressure
    • cardiovascular function
    • metabolism

    An Excess of Cortisol

    • Weakens the immune system
    • puts heart into overdrive
    • raises blood pressure
    • adversely affects brain function
    • signals the body to store fat around the organs- your belly!

It’s a Soup Day!

I heard the rain beating against our north bedroom window when I woke up this morning.  It has been raining every since.  I  downed three cups of tea, and decided to see what I could throw into the crock pot for soup.

2 cups leftover chicken, 1 sweet potato, 1 russet potato, 2 stalks celery, 4 carrots, 1 zucchini, grated, sauteed onion and garlic, spices, and 4 cups chicken broth.   I just took what I had in my kitchen and made a soup that will hopefully warm up our bodies at the end of this day.

As I was throwing the soup together, I got news from my daughter in Greece that we still owe money on her account at school, and she can’t register for spring classes until we pay.  This is a difficult time for us- my hours at work have been cut back and I am worried about where the money will come from.  Our family is definitely feeling the pinch of the economy.

Last week I wrote about trust- what would my life be like if I really trusted that God would take care of us? What if I really let go of my fear and placed my life in God’s hands?  When I live in fear, I approach life with clenched fists, holding tightly to what I have, and not allowing myself to bring in the goodness around me.

If I really trusted God, then I would believe that just like my soup, the rest of our lives will come together, ingredient by ingredient, to make a life soup that is abundant!  Our lives will be filled with variety, with the excitement of learning new things,  and  ways to bring money to the family budget.   Oh yeah, I am remembering that our lives already ARE abundant.  I already have many skills to help us financially and I am now trusting that God will direct me on the right path to make the right decisions for our family.  And in the process, I will (am) create (ing) enough income to allow Tony to work less.   Just like the soup ingredients, all I need is already within my grasp, in the pantry of my life.  Trusting God means unclenching my fearful hands and holding them open to receive the goodness that is meant for me.  It is no coincidence that holding my hands, palms up and open, is also a sign of gratitude!

Talking with God, putting my trust where it belongs, being grateful for all that comes into my life, including the challenges, connects me warmly to my soul, just like the soup will warm our bodies.

So what about you?  What ingredients are you throwing together in life’s soup to make your life more colorful and abundant?

Christmas already?

There is something wonderful about this time of year when the sun shines through the thinning foliage of the trees, when a walk takes you through crisp fallen leaves, and the air smells of autumn- damp wood, fireplaces, and even apples.

It is a great time for reflection.   I like to look at not only what has happened this year with its blessings and challenges, but look forward to the next year like a school kid, knowing that I have months of growth ahead.   I like to get out my coloring book and meditate with a mandala, coloring lines and shapes and figuring out the puzzle that is my life.  It is an endless journey.

I know many people begin making their to do list for the holidays.  Avoiding the shopping malls is on my list, where signs of Christmas are everywhere, even amid the pumpkins and ghosts.  I know the temptation is great to shop ahead and beat the stress of the season.  More will come on that topic in November.  But do yourself a favor:  Be sure to get out at least once a day, even if it is for five minutes, and take in the sights and sounds of the October days.  Savoring these last moments of warmth will come in handy when we are in the dead of winter longing for some sunshine.    It is good for your soul, connecting to nature in all her glorious colors of the season.

And maybe if we’re lucky, you and I will meet up in the same park where we can share a bench together and catch up.   We can share smiles and the warmth of friendship, and we won’t let our looming shopping days take away the joy of this moment.

Whatever your needs are, know that The Present Path is here to support you and walk with you as you journey toward wholeness!

MUFAs- Are you Nuts?

Nutritional Facts about Nuts

  • More than 40 studies have shown that including nuts in the diet can reduce the risk of heart disease regardless of what kind of nut is eaten.
  • Research shows that people who eat nuts even one time a week have  25% less heart disease than those who do not consume nuts.
  • Women who eat 5 ounces a week had one-third fewer heart attacks.
  • In 2003, theFDA approved one of the first qualified health claims for nuts and heart disease.  The claim states, ” Scientific evidence suggests but does not prove that eating 1.5 ounces per day of most nuts, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease.”

Roasted…Raw…Sprouted?

Contrary to popular belief, raw nuts are not simply plucked from trees and sold on a grocery store shelf.  Most nuts are dried to preserve them and improve their flavors and textures. These are raw nuts. While raw nuts are fairly nutritious and have no added fat, they’re often bland and tasteless.

Raw nuts also contain enzyme inhibitors which help to protect the seed and keep it from germinating too early and dying off. This also helps to keep the species going.

But these enzyme inhibitors, when introduced into the body, actually neutralize the enzymes your body uses to control inflammation and aid in digestion. In fact, eating nuts with these enzyme inhibitors can cause the pancreas to swell.

There are only two ways to destroy these enzyme inhibitors: 1) roasting, which also destroys the enzymes, and 2) sprouting, which keeps the beneficial enzymes intact.
